Well I'm a doctor. So why didn't I write a medical novel? Medical novels sell very well. One literary agent begged me to do it. But I work in medicine everyday, and my novels are an escape from the real world.
So what does a doctor know about guns? Not a lot. Especially in Australia where we have gun laws. (That's why I set it in America.)
I think I've looked after 3 gunshot wounds in my whole 20+ years of working in emergency departments. That's probably how many you see in a day in an American ED.
That's where research comes in. It helped that my husband used to be a member of a pistol shooting club.
Apart from my husband, my gun and combat experts are:-
John Toffton:- He has most recently worked as a Major in an American prison. He is an expert on weapons and concealment. He believed in my protagonist "Angie" when other's doubted that she would even be strong enough to lift an AK47. And he had the facts to back it up. He is like a walking encyclopedia of weaponry, and armed with the facts I was able to inject some authenticity into what would otherwise have been a hard to believe yarn.
My friend, H. Robert Rushing Jr., C.P.S., C.I.S., aka Shadownet. A former Freelance Security and Investigation Specialist who let me pick his brain about some of the technical and tactical related facts which I needed. He also has published a novel and is a very good artist and 3D modeler.
Panos Coliopoulos:- He has served in the army and knows lots of helpful things for my sort of writing. He also makes highly accurate 3D models of weapons which I will use when I make my Avenging Angel comic series one day. And by the way, he is one of the most peace-loving guys you could ever meet.
